A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
