Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
